Useful apt commands

apt-cache search [searchterm]

search local apt-cache for a package  containing [searchterm]

apt-file list [packagename]

lists all files associated with [packagename], even if the package is not installed

apt-file search [/path/to/file]

search for the package that “owns” [/path/to/file]

apt-cache madison [packagename]

displays all available versions of [packagename]

apt-get install [packagename]=[version]

force apt to install a specific version of a package
